Many small and local businesses are reluctant to invest in this kind of hardware, and for good reason: it can be expensive and outdated [credit card processing](https://www.gosite.com/blog/outdated-credit-card-processing-may-be-bad-for-business?hsLang=en-us) systems are susceptible to technical issues. So, when credit card processing companies offer to rent hardware to you directly, it may initially seem like a bargain. Many of these contracts include a provision that allows a provider to--very subtly--inform you that your rate has gone up and if you don’t object within 30 days, you thereby accept the rate increase.
